Game: Streets and Alleys

Supplies:

  • none

How to Play:

  1. Select one player to be the "cat" and another to be the "mouse".  Note that they could be called anything (one is "it" and chases the other, who is a "runner").
  2. All other girls line up into a series of rows such that each row has the same number of girls (for example, you could have 5 rows with 4 girls each).  The girls need to be close enough to join hands with girls in their own row, or with girls in the adjacent rows.  You always need to ensure that each row has the same number of girls.  If you have, for example, 21 girls in your group, you could have 6 rows of 3 girls (6x3=18), one cat and two mice.
  3. Have the girls join hands with the other girls in their row.  Now they have formed "streets". (the coloured dots below are the girls' heads, pink dots are their joined hands).

  4. Now have the girls turn 90 degrees and join hands with the girls in the adjacent row.  Now they have formed "alleys".

  5. Before beginning the game, have the girls practice forming the streets and alleys several times.
  6. Now release the cat and mouse!  The cat starts at one corner of the group of girls, the mouse starts at the other corner.   The cat tries to tag the mouse but they can only walk between the girls, they can not go through, over or under the joined hands.  The cat and mouse must stay within the "city" (the streets or alleys) and can not run around the outside of the girls, throughout the room or other playing area.
  7. The Guider can call out STREETS or ALLEYS at any time.
  8. When the mouse is caught, choose a new cat and mouse.
